Spicy Braised Mackerel/Saury 꽁치조림

This is something that I made while in College when I needed something to last me a few days to eat as a side dish…especially when I was in desperate need of Korean Food! Of course, it’s hard to have fish on hand, so I used canned mackerel/saury


– 1 can of Mackerel/Saury

– 1 cup of thinly sliced Radish/daikon (a few slices basically)

– 1 Onion

– 2 TBS Soy Sauce

– 2 TBS Hot Pepper Flakes

– 1 TBS Hot Pepper Paste

– 2-3 Cloves of Garlic, minced

– 2 stalks of green onion chopped

– 1/4 cup Water

– 1 chili pepper optional (for those of you who like it extra spicy)


1. Make the paste by mixing the soy sauce, hot pepper flakes, hot pepper paste, garlic, and water in a small bowl.

2. Place the radish slices into the bottom of a pot (laying it out)

3. Add the chopped onion (not the green onion) and the can of saury/mackerel (including its liquid) into the pot

4. Pour/Spoon your paste on top of the saury/mackerel evenly

5. Bring the concoction to a boil with the pot covered on medium heat for about 7-8 minutes

6. Turn down the heat to low and cook for an additional 15 minutes

7. Open the pot/Take off the lid and spoon the broth on the sides onto the fish so the paste and the broth mix without breaking the fish (it’s delicate!)

8. Add the chopped green onions and chili pepper and cook for another minute or two

Enjoy with Rice~

I wrapped mine with rice in lettuce too. It was sooooo good!
